Texas Indian Tribes of the
Southeast and Plains

Texas Indians: Southeastern, Gulf, and Plains Cultures challenges students to draw conclusions about the Native American tribes found in early Texas. In this lesson, the students learn about the Caddos, Karankawas, Jumano, and Wichitas. Modern photographs of the battlefield allow learners to gain a visual understanding of the terrain.

Students will learn about the many different Native American cultures that existed in early Texas history, draw Indian dwellingsconclusions about the Native American tribes found in early Texas, and record information about individual tribes based on picture clues and readings. Collaboration is encouraged to complete a Social Studies Skill Builder activity that requires primary source investigation coupled with readings about Native Americans in early Texas. After reviewing picture clues and comparing them to readings, students will research American Indians to discover the
differences between each tribe and their cultures.
